10,000 Miles From Home... Part One

We are here! I know some of got my email, but I wanted to post a more detailed description of our trip (for those of you who are interested enough to read this…). Beware, you may need a couple of hours.

We left our house on June 1st, at 8:30 am. We had to take a friend’s van and our car to the airport (thank you for dropping us off, Gwen and Michelle!) in order to fit us and all our stuff in the vehicles. Wow, did people ever stare at us! Two cartloads of huge suitcases, a stroller with one kid in the front and one riding on the back, and another kid pulling a carry-on suitcase (the 2 oldest girls argued the entire trip about whose turn it was to pull it, so I didn’t feel bad “making” them).

We landed in Toronto around 1:30 pm local time (I think…). We had just enough time to find our gate, sit down for some lunch, and grab a coffee (you will notice we drank quite a lot of coffee in the next 24 hours), then it was time for pre-boarding. There were many times I was very grateful for PRE boarding, let me tell you. Mind you, by the time we loaded up all our stuff/kids, everyone else was pushing to get through the line. Most people were very patient though, and I was very flattered by how many people complimented us and our kids on their good behaviour.

Anyway, this was our first long flight. Daryl and I kept looking at eachother and saying, “Can you believe we’re really doing this?!” After our supper on the plane, in which we all ate A LOT of, we tried to wind the kids down and settle them in for the night. They took quite awhile to get to sleep (understandably so) but they all eventually gave in. I was very thankful for an understanding seat-mate who didn’t mind if Adrienne rested her feet on him, watched his laptop and tried to get his attention. At one point, when he was watching The Pursuit of Happyness, she kept leaning over and loudly gaffawing at the movie. I thought it was hilarious.

And so ends part one...
